About Me
About Me

A’Tim du Val du Bois To Infinity and Beyond CGCA CGCU “Buzz” is a 1 year old (DOB: 08/10/22), 70ish pound Belgian Malinois from a health and temperament conscious breeding. He comes from Belgian and French working lines, and his sire is a titled French Ring 3 dog. I purchased Buzz as a young puppy from a trusted Trainer and friend who originally got him to be her protection sport prospect. However, Buzz does not possess the temperament of a protection dog (sport or personal) – while he is incredibly confident and loves to work, he is not at all your typical drivey Malinois, and does not find engaging with a bite sleeve or suit intrinsically rewarding. More on that to follow.

Buzz’s program consists of all phases of Service Dog training – including obedience, public access, and individualized task training. By the time that Buzz is placed with his “furever” handler, he will have a strong working foundation that is uniquely customized toward his handler’s needs. As Buzz’s Trainer, I will continue to work with his handler in order to successfully transition him and all that he has learned.

I’ve had the pleasure of spending a considerable amount of time working with and getting to know Buzz. Given his unique strengths and temperament, he he could without a doubt excel in just about any avenue of Service Dog work – from Psychiatric to Medical Alert and Response to Mobility, so long as he can be given enough mental work and structure to fulfill his genetic needs. He does not take on his handler’s emotions and is very sure of himself throughout all situations and environments. Aside from his good work ethic, he does not possess any traits that one might concern themselves with, given his breed – Buzz is not at all reactive, loves all people and animals he meets, and is extremely tolerant. He has a natural and cued off switch, is innately handler-focused while working, and enjoys physical touch and attention from his person. Truly, his temperament is more similar to a Labrador than it is to a Malinois. Due to his look and size, people tend to give us space more often while out in public in comparison to working alongside other more typical Service Dog breeds.

Health
Health

Buzz’s health clearances at this time include passing results in OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) Cardiac, Eyes, and preliminary Hips (Good) and Elbows.

Buzz holds a clean medical record – including being clear of any health issues, such as allergies, ear infections, and gastro-intestinal issues. He is up to date on all necessary vaccines, and will be neutered prior to placement.

Buzz has been conditioned to using a DogPacer (dog treadmill).

Temperament
Temperament

Buzz thoroughly meets the criteria that I look for in the temperament of a Program Service Dog. He loves to work, is naturally handler-focused, appropriately social and aware of his environment, recovers quickly and easily, and is pushy in all the right ways.

Buzz has a happy-go-lucky demeanor, a great on/off switch, and yearns to engage with his handler. He easily works through any environment or challenge presented in front of him, yet is soft enough to readily adjust his behavior when it is communicated. He is calm, collected, and thoughtful while working, not disrupted by outside stimuli – and will not take on his handler’s emotions.

Buzz enjoys meeting new people and gets along with dogs of all ages, sizes, and temperaments. Although he is friendly, he prefers to remain attentive to his handler while on duty. I have a very diverse pack, and Buzz is appropriately social with each and every dog in it.

While off duty, Buzz can be energetic, but is not high drive – he also channels his energy very easily when prompted. His mental stamina makes him a very nice candidate for someone who enjoys being active or needs a dog ready to work at any given time. Likewise, Buzz has a fantastic off switch and will often put himself to sleep when he finds the opportunity, such as at a restaurant, on a plane, or riding in the car.

Much like a typical Malinois, Buzz would love to live inside his handler’s skin. He might nudge you with his nose (a trained behavior) or push his body into yours for cuddles. Occasionally, he will act before he thinks – but for the most part, he learns quickly – and with consistent leadership, he will stop and collect himself before moving forward. Buzz is happy to follow me freely around the house, has very nice house manners, and has been taught not to get on furniture unless invited. If his bed is nearby and he is being ignored, he will often walk over to it on his own accord to rest.

Buzz is very biddable (medium to high food/low to medium toy drive), and catches on to learning new concepts quickly. As far as tug goes, he will engage, but will typically become disinterested after a few minutes. He is not “cookoo eyed” for a ball or tug, as you’d expect a typical Malinois to be. Nevertheless, he is playful and enjoys any type of engagement with his handler.

As part of Buzz’s program, he has been extensively socialized around a variety of animals and environments. He has been to restaurants, malls, urban environments, kayak trips, flown multiple times, and accompanied my family on road trips. He enjoys hiking, and I can confidently trust him outdoors off leash around my chickens, horses, and cat.

While Buzz enjoys working and being with his person, he is not one to get on furniture without permission, try to escape a closed room, bark to be let out, etc. He is comfortable being in a crate or laying on his bed for any period of time, and is used to being flexible with his freedom and sharing it with other dogs in the house. He is easy to handle in terms of grooming, vet appointments, etc – he is calm when being bathed and on the grooming table and does not display an ounce of reactivity when being handled. My vets love him, and have had nothing to say besides how sweet and easy he is.

At Home
At Home

At home, Buzz will either follow me around or rest in his bed. Even with his energetic personality, he has developed both a natural and cued off switch, and will completely relax and shut his mind off when laying in his bed. Once he is in “place”, he can technically lay there for hours without any reminder. Dogs can be running around, the TV on, I could be in another room, people can walk in and out of front door, etc and he will stay calm and collected without barking or becoming overstimulated.

In Public
In Public

Buzz is always in a good mood. He does not startle easily and as a young puppy, would recover extremely quickly from any scenario he may have found slightly odd. As a young adolescent dog, I find him to be appropriately aware of his environment. He can at times be observant, but readily remains focused on his handler. I have brought him into some unusual environments, and he has taken to every new and/or odd situation with confidence and ease. He is extremely reliable with public access and walks beautifully by my side at all times (often watching me as we move), including through malls, grocery stores, theme parks, and movie theaters. Even at his young age, he ignores distractions with little to no prompting or guidance, and will settle quickly and easily while on the job.

Buzz travels perfectly in a car, whether it’s on the passenger seat floor underneath the glove compartment or in a crate.

Buzz is E-Collar conditioned and responds efficiently to any leash and/or collar pressure. I often times will work him on a flat collar, and he is extremely receptive and remains focused, despite the type of tool worn or whether or not I am carrying treats.

Task Training
Task Training

Buzz has a diverse foundation when it comes to task training, and has been started on a wide range of skills, including Deep Pressure Therapy, Tactile Stimulation, Crowd Control, Retrieval, and Pushing Buttons. As he matures, he will also be eligible to perform Forward Momentum Pull and Follow tasks.

The Best Fit
The Best Fit

My wish is for Buzz to be placed as a Service Dog, where his skills will be used on a daily basis in some way. Even though he is a Malinois, he does not need rigorous daily exercise – but has the mental stamina to work all day if needed. So long as his mind is active, I believe he will be fulfilled. Due to his size and ability to perform a diverse range of skill sets, he can successfully go into just about any type of Service Dog work, including Psychiatric, Medical Alert and Response, or Mobility.
